Christina Karabetsos and Riley Finck strive to inspire young girls with the hope that one day they will do the same.

Twice a month the two Naperville North High School students bring in a speaker or watch videos at the Alive Center in Naperville as part of a girl empowerment club they started for sixth- through eighth-graders. Meetings conclude with an activity to remind the young girls of the lesson of the day.

Christina understands the importance of reaching junior high students.

“I struggled a bit prior to high school,” she said. “I don’t want to have them feel less than they are. What we talk about still happens in high school.”

Riley said being close in age to the girls they mentor allows them to empathize and give strategies that she and Christina have used.

Building more of those types of relationships is what Alive’s Teen Initiate is all about.
